We prayed
At the altar of what once was,
Tears streaming, hearts ringing,
Begging for a chance
Not even God can grant us.
Not ready to forgive ourselves
Or eachother,
We crawled when
We came to know
That which was unknowable
And to understand that
Which we know cannot be.

Yet this folly is why we need mercy,
Why we need kindness,
And why we need forgiveness.
If only there was more
In the hearts of man,
If only we could have the courage
To offer ourselves the forgiveness
We beg for.
We know God not to pity,
Yet we pity ourselves at his feet.
As if there was ever any other path
We wander blindly towards grace.
